if you spend your time looking through other people’s windows, you may see things that were not meant for your eyes.

the details that make life shimmer

to walk into webbs  during Holly Melancholy and the Night that saved the Day, was to walk into a phantasmagorical childhood landscape, populated with the ever slightly so sad and scary creatures, that could have only been created by auckland artist misery.

for the first time her work has moved into three dimensions, making it even easier for those of us with a scarcely a whisper of imagination to take part in this cute as hell world.

the narrative of the work is given a poetry that could have only come from the pen of grey lynn’s all around wordsmith tourettes , darkly beautiful, the perfect compliment the the sugary sweet evil of misery’s world.

one can only hope that Holly Melancholy sees the light of day in book form.

does the land have a memory of it’s own?

when we dig through the soil looking for traces of our ancestors, is this in someway the earth giving up her secrets?

is there perhaps more that she doesn’t share with us, that she stores in a language that is harder to understand.

the maori talk of wahi tapu [sacred land], any land that has been used for burial or the preperation for burial is treated differently, if one goes onto such land you must on leaving wash the hand’s and face with water, in the same fashion as you would after being at a tangi [funeral].

given that maori describe themselves as tangata whenua [the people of the land],  perhaps this secret language of papatuanuku [earth mother] was more widely understood.

we come so much to rely on modern technologies.

often there is on piece of equipment that you believe is essential to whatever creative process you are involved in, suddenly it is gone for a while, and a whole new world of creative opportunities open up to you.

some days it feels like everyone is after a little piece of you.

if you are feeling like there is little of you left over after they have all got a share, slow down take a breath and remember that there is no end to what one can give, this is all you need to do in order to regenerate.
